One sunny Saturday morning at White Rock Lake outside of Dallas a Double Crested Cormorant was soaking up the sun on a submerged tree when an American White Pelican decided he would also like to soak up some sun on this submerged tree. The series of photos taken at the time are hilarious but this one in particular shows the height of the conversation between these two birds.
American white pelicans are often seen in the company of double-crested cormorants. While they often forage for fish together, they don't usually eat the same fish and they don't hunt at the same depths of the water.
While the two birds usually peacefully coexist, pelicans do sometimes steal food from cormorants, particularly as the cormorants return to the surface with their catch.
